Next Monday there will be a solar eclipse. The boy scouts are offering a patch for this and the next one won't be until 2045!!! 24 hours to go!!!!!

The river level continues to be very low and will result in us carrying canoes and gear around several places to avoid rocks.

We will be going to the back up plan of canoeing on Kinzua Dam.

This also means we don't have to be in quite the rush so we will be meeting at 9 am at the church instead of 8 am.

We will meet up, do a gear check and head for the dam.

I will give everyone the address of the walmart up there in case we get seperated and everyone can grab lunch at the place of their choosing on the way up.

Please bring your money with you tomorrow morning.

See you all in the morning and if you have questions give me a buzz

Dan

Canoe trip details updated

Cost: After pricing food etc, cost has been adjusted to $15.00

Location: We will make every attempt to run the river, however, water levels right now are very low and we would spend a lot of time carrying gear around rocky portions. If this continues we will be leaving Roper Hollow Put in on Kinzua Dam, paddling to Hooks Brook to set camp on Day 1, Day 2 will be a day long paddle up to Onoville for Ice cream and to see the bald eagles. We will then return to camp at Hooks Brook for the night. Day 3 will break camp and paddle back to ropers hollow. Departure time will remain the same!

Please take a look at the list on the previous post and let me know if any of the adults are taking a kayak instead of a canoe. The boys will be in canoes.

Canoe Trip details

Shooting Camp has come to a close and Canoe camp is two weeks out!!! As this might be a first overnight float trip for some of you, here is what you need to know.

Boats: The boys will be paddling canoes, paired up older boy with younger boy so we have a good balance of strength and ability and don't have one boat racing ahead while another struggles. Parents will have the option of a canoe or a kayak if you own one but please keep in mind that all the gear for 35 plus people has to go somewhere!!! We have rounded up enough canoes for everyone so if don't have a boat at all, no worries

PFDS: Everyone paddling must wear a life jacket. Please make sure that you have one and that it fits!!!

Short video on selecting and fitting a PFD

We do have a couple of extra PFDS floating around but if you need one they are first come first serve and it will be a crap shoot if there is an extra that fits. Let me know asap if you dont have one and cant get one.

Packing list:
Required:
Sunscreen
Bug spray
PFD
Extra clothes, can be kept to a minimum due to wearing a bathing suit most of the time
Swim suit
Towels
toiletries
Tent, boys will be paired up in troop tents, family in a tent that they bring
flash light or lantern
sleeping bag in a dry bag, large ziplock bag or 5 gallon bucket with a lid works nicely
rain gear
water bottle

Optional:
Full brim hat, keeps the sun off your neck
Sunglasses,  glare on the water is killer
sleeping pad
camp chair, may be limited by boat space if we cant fit them all we wont take any
snacks

Provided:
Food, see menu
cooking gear
utensils, plates,cups ,bowls etc
This gear will be divided up between the boats so keep it in mind when packing!!!

Packing tips:
Sleeping bag: Walmart sells huge ziplock bags that will fit an average sleeping bag
Garbage bags don't do well as they tear and can leak
A cheap 5 gallon bucket with a lid works very well
Dry bags are the most expensive but work fantastic as they are designed for it

Clothes: Roll clothes instead of folding them and place an outfit in a ziplock bag or small dry bag
Pack your individual bags into a backpack or larger dry bag
DO NOT OVERPACK, most of the time you will be in a swimsuit
Two people should be able to fit personal gear minus a sleeping bag in a standard backpack

Accommodations:
The weekend will be primitive camping in tents on Islands. We will however have solar showers available and a portable flush toilet for the females. Males, you're on your own!!

Menu:
Friday Dinner: Sloppy joes and potato chips

Trip Details Overview:
Friday: Leave the church at 8am, lots to do on day 1 please be prompt!! ( COMING FROM ME TELLS YOU HOW IMPORTANT IT IS!!)

Sunday: Return approx. 5pm to the church

We will be paddling from Kinzua Dam to West Hickory. 40 miles

Cost: I will update this but I am estimating around 25 dollars per person and will try to keep it as close to that or under if I can.
I will have the final cost in a day or so after pricing food.

We are trying to settle up all accounts for the mid year. Most people have not paid dues and some people still owe for camps etc. Please contact Paul at 243-6320 if you were not at the meeting and find out where you stand.

Advancements

It was discussed that the boys can be working on rank requirements at home. However, the boys will need to provide proof of some kind that the requirements were finished. If you are not sure what your boy needs to advance, have him write it down, take a pic or ask me at the meetings.

Example:
The requirement is to find evidence of 10 animals. The boy takes photos of turkey tracks, bear scat etc and shows the pics to me. The boy gets credit.

Example: The boy says he completed a 5 mile hike with a compass. I ask him to show me how to use a compass, he can't. He will not get credit for that requirement without additional work.

Merit Badges must be worked on with the approval of the counselor!!
